I started out studying Trumpet and Composition in the eighties and through the various bands I played in I designed posters and graphics. With a friend of mine in the band I learnt how to use the first Apple Macintosh computers and got a job with Message Management that was run by News Limited’s Gary Davey. Gary also did a lot of business consulting to TV stations all over the world as well for News.
With Gary and his partner Russ Stiggants I worked producing corporate video and sometimes the soundtracks as well. I provided the PR and Advertising Agency with computer and graphics skills that I basically learnt on the job, largely typesetting, layout and graphics of corporate newsletters in the Adobe and Quark layout programs of the day.
When Gary went over to London to run BSkyB, I moved over to various jobs at printers, design houses and ad agencies, piloting computers for graphics and layout jobs picking up skills along the way.
I got a job at K&D Bond Direct working as an Art Director/PhotoShop Artist and Macintosh Operator. Part of the Bates Advertising Group worldwide K&D Bond Direct dealt with Direct Marketing and Loyalty programs.
Clients Included the National Australia Bank, AAMI, Medibank Private, Panasonic, Dr Le Winns Private Formula, Spotless, Workwear Direct and others.
I then ran my own consultancy and leveraged 3 Marketing Agencies who provided work to my business as well as a team of 15 contract suppliers that I managed. The agencies that I did work for were Chalice Group, Market Opportunities and Inflatable Creative (and some others). I assisted with sourcing a range of corporate clients. I also developed advertising strategies, worked on FileMaker databases for direct mail, developed creative, web sites, interactive material, and also print and magazine ads.
Clients included Eastern Energy, Tag Heuer, National Australia Bank - Financial Management, Ooh La La and many others.
I then moved on to work at Selenium Interactive in Melbourne as an Information Architect, Web Designer and Coder. Selenium was a developer of Web Sites for larger corporate clients within the Australian and Asian markets. I worked on sites such as Ticketek, CitiPower, Stuart Alexander, Docklands, HSBC Business Banking Site in Hong Kong also interactives and advertising for Crazy Johns, Telstra and others.
The work involved a high degree of hand coding including HTML/CSS/JavaScript/DHTML as well as image optimisation and technical knowledge.
Fairfax is Australia's largest publisher of Newspapers, Magazines, Websites and eNewsletters. Its publication titles include, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, BRW and The Australian Financial Review as well as other regional newspapers and well-known magazine titles.
Initially I was the Chief Creative for the Sales and Marketing teams. I also fulfilled the role of a Media Strategist. I created sales materials presentations, graphics mock-ups, code and wrote presentations for the online sales team as well as the other classified verticals. I was also the first point of call for the customers and internal teams to solve creative problems from a creative, technical or network viewpoint.
I created a series of Advertiser Guides (50) for the network that increased yield and frequency on advertising placements on the network and also increased the advertiser's ability to help them reducing calls and making it much easier for advertisers to get their advertising on the network.
I was promoted to a Business Development Manager role where I developed online advertising products and managed the integration of these products into the network. This included technical, creative and sales materials. A major part of my role was to increase the yield and number of advertising placements.
I moved over into the classifieds ‘listing’ side of the business where I became the Channel Manager for the Fairfax Digital Classified Sites providing programs and products for the classified verticals.
I then joined edocs the Online Billing division of Siebel/Oracle (independent at the time and then acquired fully).
I spent most of my time doing work for edocs through their Boston and London offices and made a great many friends and contacts. My major work focus was on Information Architecture and Coding for customer self service and online billing applications for Telcos, Banks, Insurance and Health companies. This involved travelling to sites throughout USA and Europe providing professional services.
My specialist area at edocs was XML/XSL/XSL-FO and I produced prototypes for online presentation of customer data (bills) from XML to PDF (Acrobat). As well as developing and packaging this as a product for the company. The processing engine used the JAVA FOP renderer part of the Apache project.
As an Information Architect and member of the Professional Services team I developed customer self service interfaces and architecture as well as coded up these interfaces in JSP/HTML/CSS and produced graphic design or worked with the site brands and livery.
Customer projects worked on included Cingular, Swisscom, Verizon, BT, Telecom Italia, KPN Mobile (Dutch), Bank1One America and Vodafone UK amongst others.
I worked as a project member on the Swiss Telecom split billing project with Hewlett Packard and edocs. This project had developers working across the world on interface, JSP Page Coding and integration into back end systems using the WebSphere Java Platform and I was one of these developers.
I developed the complete online application web architecture for edocs/Siebel’s/Oracle’s Credit Card application. I also created wire frames and a working click through of the application that is now used as the demonstration of the application to potential customers.
I also consulted on the development of a secure email for sending customers their billing information by email rather than them having to go to the site.
When I got back from America I provided some contract services for Fairfax Digital, Federal Publishing, emitch and others through my beingVirgil.com company.
For Federal Publishing I developed a full web Admin, B2B and B2C interface for Modern Boating Magazine and as prototype for Federal’s other magazine publications. This interface enabled boat dealers to upload and manage their boats for sale to the web site (including 5 images, managed and resized in real time). It also allowed users to search these listings to display a list from their search preferences, see details of a particular boat, with pictures and contact a dealer by email or see a list of all that dealer boats. Built with HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP/MySQL (Site Graphic Design Chris Deal - FPC)
For emitch I developed a whole new logo and livery for the company as well as its subsidiary NeoDigital and products. I also developed a fair amount of Online Advertising in Flash and GIF format breaking ground for the company in setting up their new online creative division acting as head of Professional Services. As part of this I set pricing, educated internal staff and managed the first 12 months of the set up of this division.
I also set up all the information architecture and requirements documentation for a fully online production and studio management system including modelling the business and all use cases.
I also provided work for Mitchell and Partners during this time.
Also for Federal, I developed an interface between their homehound online real estate listings web site and print publications to transfer listings details so that they could be printed in the Courier Group publications. This involved PHP/JSP and MSQL 7. This interface ran automatically triggered as a Windows Event timed to coincide with the publication deadlines. The program also cleaned up and converted content so that the formatting was exactly as expected from other listings sources (such as phone room or typesetting).
For Abercrombie and Kent I built an online travel diary that all owed customers to set up their diary using their customer number. This diary included the ability to upload pictures into a photo gallery, send diary access to friends and family by email and a postcard facility to use uploaded images to send postcards via email (as with the boating site images were resized automatically).
For Fairfax Digital I did some work with the domain.com.au team working on their sales materials, products and presentations. This included graphic design, writing presentations and developing support collateral.
For Siebel (US) I mocked up an interface for their customer Sprint. This was a self service portal for this telecommunications provider for customers to change their accounts, pay bills and other customers self service applications.
For Siebel (US) I designed and coded all the print based CSS and screens for Cingular Wireless’ B2C products for their online customer interface.
I developed all the Requirements Documentation for the CareerOne Web Site (News Digital). This also included a technical audit of their site and product.
I have worked on product development strategy documentation, advertising ideas and implementation for True Local.
I worked on a project to connect XML data between certain publications and sites for News.
I continued to update an online application and online catalogue database/ publishing system for a major distributor of consumer goods for restaurants and the hospitality trade in Sydney. This is all XML and SQL based. This has been majorly financially successful for the company. This was an application that I originally built.
I have completed a number of projects for Mitchell Communications Group including the development and design of a major brochure “The Right People” as well as developing livery and stationery layouts based on their logo design. I have also recently completed several web applications, reskinned a HR app and done some work on their website.
I retrofitted a video based folio section into a video producers website using a flash media player.
I have provided several pitch documents for Carat recently providing graphics, text, diagrams and other items and formatting them for electronic and print delivery.
I have graphic designed the Carat Future Focus layout.
I built a site for MasterCard for the MasterCard Fashion Week in Honk Kong.
I have worked on the Information Architecture for a Major American Movie Studio for their online store.
I have worked on the Information Architecture for a Major Cosmetics Giant in Singapore.
I have several fantastic clients through Relativity Communications and Sam and I continue to build the business looking forward to the fun and challenges ahead. Give us a call I'm sure we can help you.
Thanks
